I also want to know......
A quite well-known Tan Sai Siong wrote in Today's "isay" column saying that she wants to know why People's Action Party's (PAP) new blood chooses to stand in the coming General Election.
She said: "Please don't say you're putting yourselves forward because you want to repay or contribute to society. That, in my view, should be as obvious as the Merlion on the Singapore waterfront.
"If repaying society isn't on your agenda, then you shouldn't be standing at all."
She asked: "Have you considered serving Singapore as a member of the Opposition? Given the growing clamour for an alternative voice, how do you plan to best respond to that clamour as a PAP MP (Member of Parliament)?"
To tell you the truth, I do not think Singapore needs to have an Opposition. Why should we have an alternative voice? We have our own voices! If I want to say anything different from what the government has said, I just say it loudly in front of others; just as different voices have been heard every day in the newspapers, I don't think we need an Opposition to tell us what we should be unhappy about or what issues we should question.
But almost everybody thinks that if there is no Opposition, there will be no democracy and there will be no freedom. Nobody will believe that democracy and freedom can be a reality without an Opposition. This is so-called "politics", a pretty but ugly game!
If you do not agree with me, don't be annoyed, because gila mok is gila (cuckoo)!
Tan Sai Siong is a former journalist who writes on social issues. The following is another question she asked PAP new blood in her column:
"Tell me, if you see an old crone bent almost double pushing a makeshift cart over-laden with discarded cardboard late at night in Chinatown, whether your heart will swell at the strong work ethics of the elderly in Singapore? Or will you do something for that woman immediately followed by a silent vow that you will do more for her and others like her when you get into Parliament?"
No doubt Tan Sai Siong is a very humane person. If you ask me the same question, I can only tell you that I will be consumed with thoughts and worry about the old crone, but I am not going to do anything about it.
Why not Tan Sai Siong tell us what she would do about it or what we should do about it instead of asking the question? This is what I want to know.
